The Laparoscopic Urology and Training Program at VPS Lakeshore and VG Saraf Hospital, Kochi is accredited and sponsored by Aesculap academy, Germany (B Braun) along with Urocare trust. This training program is specifically and carefully tailored to bring forth future leaders in minimally invasive urology and renal transplantation. During this intensive 6 month long program the graduating participant will have ample exposure in all aspects of ablative and reconstructive laparoscopy (2D and 3D laparoscopy)  and acquire sufficient skills in these subspecialities.

Training centre profile

VPS Lakeshore hospital and research centre is a tertiary centre with 550 inpatient capacity and 120-150 outpatients in a week. About 200-250 laparoscopic procedures are performed in a year including all variety of ablative and reconstructive procedures, pediatric and adult laparoscopic procedures. About 100 renal transplantations are conducted in a year.  Apart from laparoscopy and renal transplantation, a high volume of endourology procedures are also being performed every operating day.  At both places the urology department is headed by Dr George P Abraham, senior consultant urologist. Dr George P Abraham has more than 30 years experience in urology. He has performed more than 5000 laparoscopic procedures and is one of the pioneers in laparoscopic urology with an international fame. He has been an invited faculty for various workshops in the country. He is regularly conducting laparoscopy training courses for urologists across the country.

Objectives

The objective of this fellowship is to produce urologists highly competent in minimally invasive surgery and renal transplantation. The goal of this training is to provide in depth knowledge of laparoscopic Urology (both 2D and 3D technologies), renal transplantation and relevant allied subjects.

Duration of the course will be for six months

Description of Program

This is a 6 months fellowship program involving clinical experience in laparoscopic urology and renal transplant. In addition to this clinical experience, time is available and encouraged for both clinical and publication work.

Operative Responsibilities

In a week 4 days are dedicated to operation theatre and 2 days outpatient work. Dry lab facilities will be available to consolidate laparoscopy suturing skills. Fellows will also play an active role during the laparoscopy training courses held by the department.

The clinical component of the training program will aim at development of technical skills in the operating room, development of familiarity and dexterity with laparoscopic instrumentation, and expanding the surgical judgment and experience of the fellow. The breadth of exposure will overlap both ablative and reconstructive laparoscopic procedures including simple nephrectomy, donor nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, radical prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, anti reflux procedure and ureteroneocystostomy etc. Exposure to 3D laparoscopic procedures will be a special attribute. Additionally the fellow will also have the opportunity to be actively involved in routine endourology procedures including PCNL, TURP and URS.

Clinical Responsibilities

The fellow will be expected to perform clinical duties following the norms of the hospital. The fellow has to actively participate in daily ward rounds to see the inpatients, preoperative and postoperative patients and attend the outpatient clinics. The fellow will be on the call rotation; usually alternative day.

Academic Responsibilities

Academic activities include regular clinical case discussions and academic interactions with pathology and radiology departments. The fellow will actively coordinate with the research coordinator for clinical data collection for studies and presentations. The fellow will be presenting papers/videos in intra institutional meetings, monthly Kochi Urology Club, zonal, national meetings held during the fellow’s tenure. Each fellow should be actively involved in publishing minimum 2 papers and 2 videos in indexed journals during this 6 month tenure. Additionally, the fellow will be responsible for the design and implementation of any clinical trials being conducted during their training period.

Eligibility for Admission

Basic requirement is M.Ch/DNB in Urology from a recognized institution. 2 years experience post M.Ch/DNB is desirable.
